Legion of Cypress

At first glance this is a portrait of trees. The cypress trees surrounding San Francisco's Legion of Honor have watched the city far longer than any of us. At their feet lies the modest Kanrin Maru Memorial, almost invisible, quietly engraved into stone. It commemorates a moment in history yet asks for no attention. Behind the trees, the Pacific Ocean continues its timeless conversation with the shore.  Another title was Silent Witnesses. Humans carve names, nature remembers differently. They ask for nothing and forget nothing. Memory is often held as much by places as by people.
